Blend: Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. A touch of Romania in Chilian wine! US born Ed Flaherty is the experienced chief winemaker of Chile’s Southern Sun Wine Group. He is responsible for the production of award-winning Misiones de Rengo, Vina Mar and Tarapaca wines.
Flaherty 2005 was made by friends and family at his home near the village of Santa María, in the Aconcagua Valley. Produced with traditional methods, Ed’s own boutique wine displays the classic fruit flavors of the Aconcagua Valley, with a rich base of black cherry, ripe plum and dried peach (called huesillos, en Chile). Notes of spearmint, dark chocolate, and toasted oak contribute complexity and depth. This medium-bodied wine has sweet, suave tannins.
The grapes were hand picked and crushed directly into one-ton fermenting bins. The Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah were hand harvested and delivered in small picking lugs on the 26th March and 1st April from the windy riverside Manzur Vineyard just outside of San Felipe in the Aconcagua Valley. The musts were punched down three times a day throughout the fermentation, and then the wine was let to macerate on the skins for 20 days. After being basket pressed, it was aged 18 months in barrels - 75% used French and American oak and 25% new Romanian! and Hungarian oak.
“The wine drinks nicely. It’s even got a touch of Romania. Best before 2011. Enjoy, as we do, with friends, family, and food. We hope it is one of the highlights of your day.”
